Borrell says EU failed to take action against Israel's human rights violations
Israel has faced repeated allegations of war crimes during its conflict with Hamas in Gaza. The military operation began after the October 7, 2023, attack by the Palestinian militant group, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and over 200 hostages taken. Since then, more than 60,000 people, mostly civilians, have died in Gaza, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry. Israel has also been accused of hindering humanitarian aid.
Borrell highlighted that approximately one-third of the bombs dropped on Gaza are manufactured in Europe.
He told the EU Observer that many member states are unwilling to impose sanctions on Israel. He also criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for not prioritizing the issue of sanctions against Israel and for blocking open discussion within the commission.
Borrell pointed out that the EU has sanctioned “maybe 20 people” over Israeli settlement activities in the West Bank, despite these actions being deemed illegal internationally.
“We sanctioned thousands in Russia for less,” he said, dismissing the sanctions considered for West Jerusalem as “a bad joke.”
Describing the situation in Gaza as involving “horrors” that surpass other conflicts, Borrell condemned the actions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating they exceed many war crimes previously condemned by the EU.
