UN Chief Warns of Global Rise in “Rule of Force”

(MENAFN) The United Nations Secretary-General warned on Monday that “the rule of force” is expanding worldwide, as powerful actors disregard international law and use technologies, including artificial intelligence, to undermine human rights.

"Human rights are under a full-scale attack around the world," Antonio Guterres told the opening of the UN Human Rights Council’s annual session in Geneva.

"The rule of law is being outmuscled by the rule of force."

Guterres emphasized that "this assault is not coming from the shadows, or by surprise. It is happening in plain sight, and often led by those who hold the greatest power."

While he did not single out specific situations in detail, he condemned Russia’s war in Ukraine, noting that more than 15,000 civilians have been killed during four years of conflict.

"It is more than past time to end the bloodshed," he said.

The UN chief also drew attention to "blatant violations of human rights, human dignity and international law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory." He warned that the situation there followed a "stark, clear and purposeful" trajectory, with the two-state solution being eroded "in broad daylight."

"The international community cannot allow it to happen," Guterres insisted.

In his final in-person address to the UN’s top human rights body, he added that erosion of rights is not limited to the worst conflict zones.
