Australia Slaps Sanctions on Iran Over Human Rights Violations

(MENAFN) Australia on Tuesday unveiled sweeping financial penalties and travel restrictions targeting Iranian individuals and organizations accused of serious human rights violations, adding significant pressure on Tehran amid mounting international scrutiny.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed the measures in an official statement, identifying seven individuals and four entities with alleged ties to Iran's security apparatus and financial infrastructure as the primary targets.

"In January, the Iranian regime massacred thousands of its own citizens and carried out mass arrests of peaceful protesters, torturing detainees, subjecting them to forced confessions and preventing them from communicating with loved ones," she claimed. "The regime limited internet access to stop the world from learning of these atrocities."

Canberra's designations cover a range of alleged abuses, including the enforcement of Iran's compulsory hijab laws, systematic surveillance of activists and political dissidents, and the unlawful detention of foreign nationals, according to the Australian government.

Beyond human rights concerns, the sanctions also take direct aim at financial networks allegedly funneling resources to armed proxy groups and supporting Iran's ballistic missile program.

The announcement was coordinated with the United Kingdom, which simultaneously rolled out its own parallel set of sanctions as part of a broader allied effort, the government's readout indicated.

Tuesday's action brings the total number of Iran-related sanctions imposed under the Albanese government to more than 230, targeting Iranian-linked individuals and entities — over 100 of whom are connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Tehran had not issued any immediate response to the latest round of accusations and penalties at the time of reporting.
