Indonesian Soldiers Receive Prison Sentences for Attack on Rights Activist

(MENAFN) Four members of Indonesia's military have received prison sentences after being convicted for their roles in an acid assault targeting human rights advocate Andrie Yunus, as stated by reports on Wednesday.

According to reports, Edi Sudarko was handed a three-year prison term, while Budi Hariyanto Widhi Cahyono received a sentence of two and a half years. Nandala Dwi Prasetya was ordered to serve two years behind bars, and Sami Lakka was sentenced to one and a half years.

The court determined that all four men participated in the attack against Yunus, who works with KontraS, a human rights organization officially known as the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence.

In explaining its decision, the court pointed to several factors that increased the seriousness of the offense. These included the soldiers' failure to uphold their responsibilities, the harm caused to the military's public image, the intentional nature of the assault, their "arrogance," and the enduring physical and psychological impact suffered by Yunus. The activist was left with permanent damage to one of his eyes.

The assault took place on March 12 shortly after Yunus attended a discussion addressing the military's role in civilian matters.

As a result of the attack, he sustained serious burns to his face, chest, and arms.
