NUJ to hold Belfast vigil for Martin O'Hagan
The NUJ Belfast & District branch will hold a vigil at Writer's Square in Belfast on Monday 28 September to mark the 25th anniversary of the murder of union member Martin O'Hagan.
The union will mark the anniversary by remembering O'Hagan and reiterating the call for an independent investigation into his murder.
Kevin Cooper, NUJ Belfast & District branch vice chair, will introduce the vigil before a short speech by Séamus Dooley, NUJ assistant general secretary. There will be music, poetry and the unveiling of a new commemorative banner. Among those in attendance will be Fran McNulty, NUJ joint president, and Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary.
Attendees will assemble at 12pm and the vigil starts at 12:30pm. NUJ members and supporters are welcome to attend.

"Martin’s family, Sunday World colleagues, NUJ members, trade unionists, human rights groups, civic society representatives, friends and supporters are welcome to join Belfast and District branch members in remembering Martin O’Hagan. Martin O’Hagan was murdered because he was doing his job as a journalist, no more no less. Our thoughts are with all those who suffered loss or injury as a result of recent conflict and wars around the world. As journalists we maintain our commitment to peace, human rights, democracy, justice and truth."
Dooley said:
"The 25th anniversary of Martin's murder is a time to reflect on his legacy as well as highlighting our ongoing demands for an independent investigation. It is a poignant time for his daughters and siblings and for the wider family circle. I will also remember the dignity of Marie and her young daughters in the aftermath of his horrific murder. Marie died in April 2022, and we will remember her also at Monday's vigil."
